THE NIGHT SHIFT

Life always seems to throw curves at you. We all go through it while trying to develop the morals and creeds that we will live by. Sometimes things happen that test our resolve about the code of ethics that we create for ourselves. There are times when we pass the tests, there are other times when we don’t. My own resolve was put to a severe test the day you were hired to work at my company.

You see, after a bad experience during my first gig after graduating college, I had promised myself to never again to shit where I ate. You know the old adage that messing around with somebody in your place of work can only lead to two things, trouble and more trouble; I had lived it in spades. Shortly after I got the job, I started seeing a girl who worked in the department across the hallway from my own. Turns out my manager had been trying to get with ole girl for two years and didn’t appreciate a new guy coming in and getting the panties in a few short weeks. My life quickly became a living hell. Only an unexpected job offer from a company that I’d interviewed with a few months prior saved me from months of misery. I left the company and never looked back.

I learned two things from that experience; don’t lose control of your logic the first time a pretty woman smiles at you and that your livelihood is more important than your libido. Between that day and the day you stepped off of the elevator on our floor, I had turned down quite a few offers for dates; and from some very attractive co-workers, I might add. My motto became “everything by the book” and all the ladies in the office knew it. From what I understand “SP”, as in “Strictly Professional”, became my nickname among the sistas, as they related my status to the new ones who might have inquired.

The morning you arrived had started off normal enough. I had gotten in my usual workout and made it to the office early. I had just stepped into the break room to warm my bran muffin and get a cup of my favorite green tea. As I exited, I saw you at the receptionist’s desk. Actually, it was at the exact moment that I was about to bite into my muffin, and everything just seemed to stop. For a split second my mouth was literally sitting wide open. If someone had stuck an apple in it, I would have looked like the main course at a Hawaiian luau. The only thing that snapped me out it that trance was Sandra walking past making a sarcastic remark about the situation. I gathered myself and headed back to my office; hoping that you didn’t notice me making a fool of myself.

Later in the morning, I heard footsteps coming down the hall. The one-sided commentary told me that someone was being given the grand tour.
